Purpose, Phases, and Procedures
The commissioning of large systems represents a crucial phase in the life cycle of an industrial, civil, or energy infrastructure. It is the process through which we verify that the system, once completed, meets all required design, regulatory, and functional requirements, ensuring safety, efficiency, and reliability before it enters service.
Main Phases
The testing process is generally divided into several phases:
- Static and Structural Testing: Verification of the integrity of load-bearing structures and architectural elements, with static and dynamic tests (e.g. pressurization, simulated loads, etc.).
- Functional Testing: Checking the correct functioning of all subsystems (electrical, hydraulic, automation systems, etc.), including the interaction between them.
- Performance Testing: Measurement of the overall performance of the plant compared to contractual or design standards (e.g. installed power, energy efficiency, treatment capacity).
- In-service testing (or commissioning): Controlled start-up of the system for an observation period during which actual operating data is collected, anomalies are checked and final calibrations are carried out.
- Preparation of Test Documentation: At the end of the tests, a test report is produced containing the results obtained, any requirements and the final outcome (positive, with reservations or negative).
Purpose of the Test
The testing aims to:
- Ensure that the works are carried out correctly according to the project;
- Verify compliance with technical and safety regulations;
- Test the operation of systems under real or simulated operating conditions;
- Validate expected performance in terms of production, energy consumption, emissions, efficiency, or capacity.
Actors Involved
The testing involves several professional figures:
- The tester (internal or external), responsible for technical validation;
- The project manager and the site technicians;
- Suppliers and installers of the systems;
- Any third-party bodies responsible for regulatory control or certification (e.g., Local Health Authority, Fire Brigade, ARPA).
